For starters, they offer three distinct classrooms, including a dedicated toddler programme for children aged 2–3, helping create a smooth progression as children grow. The learning extends beautifully into the outdoors, where native flora and a vegetable garden serve as an immersive natural classroom.

During the early years, the curriculum focuses on language, mathematics, and practical life skills while supporting children in developing confidence and independence. I spoke with a mother whose daughter attended the preschool, and she credited the environment with helping her child become noticeably more independent within just a few weeks.

What also stands out is the emphasis on consistency, uninterrupted work cycles, and building strong relationships within the learning community. Children remain with the preschool until age six, benefiting from its unique 5–6 curriculum and strong links with the Berhampore Primary Montessori Unit, which helps support a seamless transition to school.

One consideration is the attendance requirements. The toddler programme requires a minimum enrolment of three days per week, while children in the 3–6 classrooms attend five days per week until at least 1:00 pm each day. While this may not suit families seeking more flexible schedules, the structure helps children fully engage with the Montessori curriculum and make meaningful progress in their learning.

Authentic Montessori, Nurturing Independence and Creativity

Our eldest daughter is in her final year at this beautiful preschool and our youngest has just started. This is an authentic Montessori school which has nurtured our daughter’s independence and creativity. The teachers are wonderful and show immense dedication and care, the prepared environment is set up so well and the grounds and gardens are stunning. Capital Montessori operates as a parent run school which really makes for such a community feel and a sense that you’re part of an extended family.

Beautiful Physical Environment and Growing Confidence

The physical environment and resources at our school are beautiful, from the carefully landscaped gardens, edible gardens, playground, and nature based classroom materials with no screens.  Caring for the environment is also a big part of the Montessori philosophy; with children seen as kaitiaki of their space. To enter a classroom seeing young children engaged, calm and excited to learn is a real joy. The staff even frequently organise off-site educational trips to local landmarks like Te Papa. 

One downside is the rigid 52-week fee commitment, requiring full payment regardless of family holidays or absences. 

However, if you’re looking into various child care centres in Wellington, the highly qualified teaching team here is a solid choice. 

Warm, Welcoming Environment with Fun Excursions

After moving to Wellington beginning of last year we visited a few centres…upon visiting Capital City my daughter instantly felt at ease. The teaching staff and children are all so lovely and kind, the environment is warm and welcoming.

The Teachers are well organised and always go out of their way to create new and exciting experiences for the children.

Being centre city the children often get to go on wonderful excursions around the inner city.

My daughter always wants to go to preschool and we can see how much her confidence has grown.

Run as an authentic parent cooperative, the community actively oversees management decisions and daily operations. They even offer financial assistance scholarships on a case-by-case basis to promote genuine inclusivity. 

I recently walked past the grounds while waiting for an appointment with a nearby paediatric doctor, and the peaceful integration with the neighbouring school campus was remarkable. 

With this preschool’s setup, expat families and new arrivals can find an established community to help their children settle into a new routine. The optional holiday care program here even adds excellent flexibility for working parents.

You should note, however, that their billing structure doesn’t provide refunds or deductions for missed days due to illness.

Teachers Help Children Settle and Grow

When we joined this preschool, our little one settled in very smoothly, the teachers really put an effort to make a connection with the her and make her feel at home. The teachers really focus on helping each child grow at their own pace, we loved how they balance individual attention with teamwork. The preschool is located near the park, where kids regularly go for nature walks and this is what our daughter liked the most. We definitely built great memories there, it is a wonderful place to bring your child.

Remarkable Guidance, Support, and Development

Here, they bill families on a per-hour basis rather than charging daily rates.  They also intentionally cap its session size at 26 children to ensure a calm and supportive learning space. 

The customizable attendance blocks are incredibly helpful for parents needing flexible half-day options. You do need to commit to at least two days per week, as they don’t permit single-day enrollments. 

So, if you’re a full-time worker, you’ll need to do some extra planning to prepare for frequent seasonal closures, which include a two-week Christmas shutdown.

On the bright side, many parents appreciate that getting to the preschool is straightforward. The building sits directly on a major public transit line with bus stops right outside, making it very convenient to access.

Warm, Enriching Environment for Exploration and Play

We’ve had both of our kids attend this preschool (one still there now). It’s such a lovely, warm, welcoming environment and the kaiako really go the extra mile to help the kids feel welcome, and create a safe enriching environment to learn through exploration and play. Our kids have developed secure attachments here and they have lots of fun with the endless creative activities and play setup. Highly recommend.

Operating as a charitable organisation, Mount Cook Preschool reinvests all excess revenues straight into classroom resources and upgrades. The highly favourable staff ratio of one educator for every six children guarantees close personal supervision.

Plus, it sits within a local primary school campus, giving children access to expanded resources and a larger educational network

It’s also noteworthy that their operational hours are specifically structured around standard school timetables. Coordinating schedules is made much easier for families with older siblings. 

However, this shortened daily schedule is quite restrictive for parents needing standard full-day coverage. Additionally, they don’t have the facilities or licensing to take in infants.

Still, the environment is nurturing here. They bridge the gap between play and structured learning, so older children are better prepared for primary education.

Staff Helped Daughter Learn New Culture, Language

We can remember the first days when our daughter joined the preschool. Although It was her first experience in a new country, the wonderful, friendly and skilled staff helped her learn the new culture and language through creative learning and play.

Over one year, we have seen a drastic change in Ava’s confidence in learning new things, communication with other kids and making colourful and beautiful artworks. All these skills have prepared her for the start of school in the next few months.
