Let me know if this image sounds familiar. You’re standing in a store ready to check out, but you remember your budget. You have two options: whip out your calculator on your phone, or just obsessively stare at the checkout screen, hoping you haven’t gone over.

As my group’s local bargain finder, I often have to calculate things quickly at stores. I’ve gotten pretty fast at it, but when my friends ask me to help explain how I do it, I start coming up blank. Knowing is different from teaching, after all!

I’m no longer a student, but this is proof that people can always benefit from a tutoring service

Luckily, there’s no shortage of math tutors in Auckland to prep you for anything, from NCEA tests to being able to calculate anything on the spot. Here are our favourites!

How much does it cost to get a math tutor in Auckland?

Getting a math tutor in Auckland can set you back anywhere from $20 to $105 an hour, depending on the number of sessions needed and any assessments and study materials needed in the lesson.

Well, the name can’t get clearer than this! MATHEMATICA came up often among locals as a must-visit for folks looking into math tutors, so we swung by.

True to their name, MATHEMATICA offered lessons primarily in math subjects for students aged 5 to 16. Apart from basic maths for grades 1 to 5, we also noted their specialised courses for the NCEA, Cambridge, and IB exams.

Right off the jump, accessibility was a major highlight among the students we spoke to. MATHEMATICA provides various options for tutoring, whether students are more comfortable in a group or even in personalised one-on-one sessions.

Of course, not everyone can manage travelling to the tutoring centre every week. That’s why we’re pleased to hear that online tutoring was also available at the centre.

Finally, customers mentioned their scheduling was particularly accommodating, with a set time range on specific days for booking lessons. Rescheduling classes was also notably quick as long as customers gave enough prior notice.

That said, customers wished for more clarity on session pricing. As it stands, customers mentioned having to wait a while after inquiring with the tutoring service to get a price quote for each tutoring session.

Pros

  • Flexible and accommodating scheduling
  • Options for both solo and group tutoring available
  • Available for online tutoring

Cons

  • Difficulty clarifying pricing for each session

As anyone would know, every student learns at a different pace. One appeal of getting a tutor is that it helps students pick up what they can’t quite get at their schools, and locals were happy to mention the Expert Maths Tuition Center as the go-to spot for this.

What we were greeted with when we visited was pretty refreshing! The centre’s ambience was quite welcoming, and the team readily answered our questions. Students we spotted at the centre also seemed fairly relaxed in their lessons.

Their lesson offerings were pretty staggering once we heard them! The centre covered maths for different age ranges, from primary to secondary. To our surprise, they also offered prep sessions for students aiming for the SAT or other entrance exams.

Students were generally pleased with the exam prep sessions, noting that they could also be applied to all three levels of the NCEA and the Cambridge exams.

Students also told us that the lesson plans were pretty personalised, accommodating their learning style and current level with the work. This also extended to the homework and study materials given at the centre.

That said, we found the prices for each session quite high when compared to other tuition centres.

Pros

  • Personalised lesson plans and homework
  • Reliable exam prep
  • Welcoming ambiance at center

Cons

  • High costs for sessions

– Ms. Alesha Thomas, Google Review

“On my recent patterns and graphs topic test I achieved 86%. Six percent higher than my goal of 80%. EMT greatly helped me in achieving my goal. The homework being fitted to my level allowed me to easily learn.”

If you’ve ever looked into tutoring at all here in Auckland, there’s a chance you might have run into a Kip McGrath tuition centre somewhere. With lessons on both English and maths, we have families to thank for pointing us to Kip McGrath Stonefields.

The first thing we immediately noted was how quickly the team responded to our inquiries. We reached out to ask about the details of their tutoring services and received detailed responses, which we appreciated.

From here, we got to hear about their maths tuition, which largely focused on primary to secondary maths. Specifically, their lessons covered concepts such as fractions, percentages, and even algebra.

A few students we spoke with also mentioned that the initial assessment session is free, helping newcomers see if they’re comfortable at the centre.

That said, some students mentioned there was a bit of a wait after the initial assessment. It reportedly took the team some time to determine the best lesson plan for the student, which resulted in a long wait to get started.

On the bright side, the centre has no minimum lock-in time for its tutoring sessions. This can help students looking for a centre where they can drop in for a refresher course.

Pros

  • Proactive and responsive communication
  • Free initial assessments
  • No minimum lock-in for tutoring

Cons

  • Long waiting time to receive lesson plans

“We are really impressed with the progress we are seeing in both our boys. Marie goes above and beyond with her communication to us as parents about how the boys are going, and she has a great, engaging personality with the kids.”

– Ms. Tory Hibbard, Google Review

“Our daughter is thriving in her learning both at school and at home because of Kip. She looks forward to going into the centre every week. We have so much respect for Mari honestly. She and her team genuinely care to see your child succeed.”

With how busy students’ schedules can get, families usually turn to after-school tuition centres. When we asked around for recommendations, Extraordinary Kids came a quite often.

The centre’s hours are fairly consistent, with a pretty flexible rescheduling policy. This makes it one of the most reliable after-school tuition options in Auckland.

The centre itself was pretty clean, with a fairly welcoming ambience. We also found the whole atmosphere surprisingly calm, even with some of the younger students out and about.

The centre offers several lessons and subjects, mostly focused on reading, writing and maths. Their maths tuition covered everything from Year 2 to Year 10 maths, which we found pretty handy for younger learners.

We especially appreciated the centre’s use of special learning materials to aid students with dyscalculia. The centre reportedly used materials such as abacuses, paper money, and other props to further flesh out lessons.

One last word of advice some parents had for us was to try to enrol in their lessons early. The centre had limited slots for groups to take its tutoring services, so it can be quite tricky to get a session on short notice.

Pros

  • Calm and welcoming learning space
  • Supportive of learning conditions
  • Reliable after-school schedule

Cons

  • Difficulty obtaining tutoring slots

Incredibly supportive and nurturing towards the children

“Our son has dyslexia and dyscalculia. It was so difficult to find a good tutor for him. We are so happy to have found Extra Ordinary Kids. Yvette is incredibly supportive and nurturing towards the children.”

– Ms. Yuko Wiles, Google Review

I have seen huge improvement with my daughter

“I have seen huge improvement with my daughter since attending Extraordinary Kids with Yvette. It has given her a massive confidence boost. We particularly liked the one on one attention and collaborative environment.”

STEM courses are a popular choice among older learners, but can be notoriously difficult to prepare for and stay in. When we started asking students in these age ranges about their preferred centre, Ace Tutors was a clear favourite!

It wasn’t hard to see why, especially once we took a gander at their tutoring services. The centre offered basic maths, as well as specific courses in statistics, calculus, and even geometry and trigonometry.

Given that these courses are pretty difficult to study on their own, we asked students about their experiences with the lessons. Many loved the supportive environment and attention given to each student.

Students also praised the study resources and materials provided during lessons. These materials included everything from basic books and study guides to curriculum and syllabus documents for subjects and the NCEA.

This made their exam prep sessions quite the highlight among students as well. Students we chatted with praised the centre as a reliable spot to study for exams, especially since it provided revision guides and past papers for various tests.

If you’re looking into dropping in for tutoring here, we’d recommend paying the centre a visit or giving them a call. They’re quite difficult to contact via email.

Pros

  • Reliable study resources for STEM subjects
  • Good exam prep sessions
  • Supportive, individual tutoring

Cons

  • Difficulty contacting the company online

Has been a one source for tutoring in all STEM subjects

“What’s made it so easy is that it has been a one source for tutoring in all STEM subjects, Maths, Science, Physics and Chemistry. That has saved us the hassle of going to different centres for different subjects.”

– Mr. Paul Xerxes, Google Review

Param was a great tutor

“Param was a great tutor. Considering I had to relearn all levels of trigonometry and physics that I have not touched in almost 10 years, and needed to know and understand in the period of 3 weeks, I was on the back foot.”

– Mr. Sam Mitchell, Google Review
