If you’re into the old-world charm of villas and bungalows, you should consider looking at Alena Homes. 

Helen Fenwick, the owner, has lived in this type of home. This explains why she captures villas so authentically. 

We like how hands-on they are with each process. We’ve heard Helen is on-site at least once a week, and they seem to have a tight-knit team. Clients talk about how everyone—from the roofers to the painters—delivers solid workmanship.

And let’s not forget the practical side. Helen is apparently a bit of a wizard when it comes to sourcing good deals on materials and subcontractors. That’s a huge benefit when you’re building something that could easily get pricey if costs aren’t kept in check.

Urban Homes has shaped their process around making people feel involved and supported. It’s something we heard from customer feedback again and again.

One client described spending close to 18 hours in design consults and still came away feeling not worn down, but heard and inspired. For us, it says a lot about their patience and collaborative spirit. 

We also like how they simplify the overwhelming parts of building—choosing tiles, carpet, handles. 

Instead of leaving clients adrift in catalogues, they invite them into their head office studio. From what we’ve gathered, their process is organised, guided, and even described by some as fun.

Their Smartkey finance option is also handy. It’s where buyers can put down as little as a 5% deposit with no payments until the build is complete.

It’s not something every builder offers, and it positions them well for clients who need that flexibility without sacrificing quality.

That said, we also heard from a client who mentioned small tasks or touch-ups dragging on long after handover. It seems to be a one-time thing, but still worth noting.

Their house-and-land packages deserve a special mention too. For many buyers, juggling land purchase, design, and build can be a recipe for stress.

Latitude simplifies this by bundling it all together. You still get to choose where you live and what your house looks like, but without the endless coordination.

We got a little hold of their process from speaking with their clients. It starts with a chat about your lifestyle and needs. It’s then followed by a free on-site assessment that looks at sun orientation, slope, and site levels.

That attention speaks to us since not a lot of builders go that far upfront.

Yes, their system is generous compared to many project builders, but we still think it works within a framework. 

If you’re dreaming of a unique architectural statement, you may find their model too restrictive.

Nixon Homes is a family-owned company run by brothers Cameron and Michael Holmes. We’ve heard from clients that they remain directly involved from the first meeting through to the final walkthrough. 

Instead of outsourcing most of the work, they use their own in-house crews, with Cameron personally managing the teams. 

This setup gives them tighter quality control, and we’ve heard great things about their craftsmanship.

From what we’ve seen, they seem to excel at tailored design and lifestyle-driven planning. Rather than presenting a model home catalogue, they create spaces that reflect your specific needs.

A good example we found is their ability to design dual-purpose rooms, like a master suite that can double as an Airbnb unit.

It’s pretty smart for families who want flexibility or those who see their property as both a residence and an investment.

They also offer sustainable options, like incorporating locally grown timber into architectural features. It’s good news for eco-conscious homeowners. 

That said, they’re a smaller operation with limited crews, so project timelines can be slower compared to larger firms.
