The Top 5 Home Healthcare Services in New Zealand So Your Loved One Stays Safe and Supported
Even I have to admit I’m kind of getting up there in years. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still spry enough to do what I love, but I’ve started to notice a lot of the friends I have around my age range start wondering whether they need to get home healthcare.
After all, we live in busy times, and so do our families and loved ones, making it harder for us to always count on them being home. Since it’s so easy for us to get sick or injured and have to stay at home, the peace of mind a caregiver brings is invaluable.
I might have startled my family when I asked them to help me look into home healthcare services here in New Zealand, but I just like keeping options. After doing some rounds, here are some of our favorites for when the time comes.
How much does it cost to avail home healthcare services in New Zealand?
Arranging for home healthcare services in New Zealand can cost you anywhere from $30 to $50 an hour, depending on the services included in their treatment plans and additional fees like transport.
1. Home Sweet Home Care

Address: Whanganui, New Zealand
Contact Details: +64 274 444 948, [email protected]
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday: Open 24 hours
Families and folks around the North Island areas might already be familiar with Home Sweet Home Care. The company has risen to prominence as a trusted home healthcare provider among locals, and we just had to drop by and find out why.
We immediately spotted one reason: the communication was fast. The team responded to our inquiries promptly after we reached out, and they even proactively provided additional information and resources to help us understand their services.
This lets us get a glimpse into their treatment plans. They offer everything from companionship in daily activities to more specialized support for specific conditions like dementia or post-op recovery.
Of course, no two patients are the same. We asked both the staff and a few clients about how flexible these plans were, and we heard pretty good things! These plans could be personalized and adjusted to fit the patient as needed.
Regulars also praised the transparency of their pricing and how easy it was to obtain a quote, even before the services were rendered. We find this helps potential customers decide whether the service is within their budget early.
That said, one factor regulars seemed to want more transparency about was the schedules for their carers. We’d definitely recommend keeping in touch with your assigned caretaker to ease this if you do end up availing of their home healthcare.
All of the staff were exceptional

2. Abode HomeCare

One difficulty when arranging home healthcare is creating a timetable that works for both you and your loved one, and, in some cases, the carer as well. When asking around locals for care services with flexible timing, they pointed us to Abode HomeCare.
It wasn’t hard to see why. For starters, Abode HomeCare had both short-term and long-term options. Patients who only need a quick check-up every now and then can use their pop-in home care, while others may benefit from an overnight visit.
That said, we were immediately told by staff and regulars that there was a minimum visit time of two hours. We do think this can be a bit daunting for more private or introverted patients.
When we asked clients about the quality of their healthcare, many were happy to say that the timeliness of the visits. Caregivers were reportedly very punctual on days they had to visit, which is especially important for handling early chores.
Another factor praised by regulars was their health assessments. It can still be a little nerve-racking to be away from your loved one, so we see how getting regular updates on their health and condition can help ease customers’ nerves.
That said, this means that regular visits are encouraged. Due to this, a few clients mentioned having trouble rescheduling visits from their caretakers, especially with the long notice period.
Made a difficult time so much easier

Coming in morning and afternoon to support her

Contact Details: +64 9 966 0011, Email
Operating Hours: Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Closed on Saturday and Sunday
Looking into home healthcare services can be intimidating, especially if you’re not sure of what type of care your loved one needs. Given that, we were surprised to hear about Care on Call being a hotspot and a good starting point for folks new to this service.
When we reached out, we found the staff very welcoming. They helped us immediately get an idea of what their offerings covered, ranging from vaccination services to full injury support.
We were also pleased to hear that this professionalism extended to their caregivers, though that does seem like a given! Still, it’s always reassuring to hear that the caretakers maintain a professional and accommodating attitude throughout.
Their care plans were also quite flexible, as told to us by some clients we got to chat with. Their care plans can be customized down to which caregivers will see the patient at what times, and we find that really handy for patients with preferred caregivers.
Finally, what really caught our eye was the offer of free care assessments. Many clients let us know about the detailed assessments the company offered, letting families get a good idea of what services to book for their loved one and when.
That being said, one hiccup some faced was the pricing. A few let us know that their pricing could feel a little unclear, making budgeting ahead of time trickier. We’d definitely recommend asking the staff about it during your assessment, just in case.

4. The Good Companion

Address: 18 Broadway, Newmarket, Auckland 1023
Contact Details: +64 21 717 884, [email protected]
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday: Open 24 hours
At first glance, The Good Companion provided a lot of familiar home care services, like post-hospitalization recovery and palliative care. What really caught our eye, though, was how far they were willing to travel.
We don’t just mean their supported areas, like Christchurch to Auckland and beyond. Caregivers were reportedly willing to provide services to patients already living in care facilities, bringing a much-needed reminder of home and family.
Clients we spoke with expressed satisfaction with these services, especially the staff’s accommodating approach to their loved ones. It was no wonder the company rose to prominence for its aged and elderly care.
Another factor praised by regulars was the caretakers’ recommendations. We can see how hearing this helps clients get much-needed updates on the condition of their loved ones, and we appreciate this kind of proactivity.
That being said, one thing we do have to note is their rates. We noticed that these can be higher than with other home healthcare services, so we’d definitely recommend consulting with the team and your loved one to determine whether they’re a good fit.
Quality of care and services provided has been excellent
“We started using The Good Companion in December 2020. The quality of care and services provided has been excellent. The match of companion with the needs of the family couldn’t have been better.”
– Ms. Charlotte Botes, Google Review
Connected well with the client and their spouse

5. Dovida New Zealand

Address: Suite 3.2/30 Saint Benedicts Street, Eden Terrace, Auckland 1010
Contact Details: +64 9 300 6053, [email protected]
Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday: Open 24 hours
Ironically, home healthcare doesn’t always mean the patient is stuck at home all the time. Patients sometimes have to go to hospitals for check-ups, and if you can’t always be there to transport them, then Dovida New Zealand might be a good choice for you.
Their services are quite varied, but what caught our eye was their specialist care for conditions like arthritis, disabilities, and dementia.
The team was also quick and responsive, which is a plus when you’re arranging medical help. They responded readily to our questions about their services and booking process.
This booking process also won over regulars, whom we got to talk to. It can be a bit of a logistical nightmare to sort out medical arrangements, so quite a few clients were more than happy to have a streamlined process for booking their services.
Finally, there were their transport services. The caretakers are willing to help patients get to and from hospitals, which we find very convenient for patients recovering from surgery or otherwise needing medication and regular check-ups.
That said, a few regulars also mentioned difficulties requesting a specific caretaker for each visit, which can be tricky if the patient already has a preferred caretaker. We’d recommend keeping in touch with the carers themselves, just in case.
The set up was so easy and streamlined
“Mum has had the best care and formed positive relationships with her carers.
The set up was so easy and streamlined, mums needs were always foremost and she always had a voice in the level of care required.”
– Ms. Lynette Dorothy Watkins, Google Review
I will always be grateful
“My parents did eventually have to go into care, however they could not have stayed at home for as long as they did without the care from the wonderful ladies at Dovida. I will always be grateful for this.”
– Ms. Kathryn Jean, Google Review
